The Singing Dunes (Barkhan) are one of the most mysterious natural phenomena in Kazakhstan, located in Altyn-Emel National Park. The dune is about 150 metres high and stretches for several kilometres, producing a unique humming sound that can be heard from far away.
The singing occurs when sand grains rub against each other during wind movement or when people slide down. Scientists believe synchronised vibrations produce frequencies similar to low-pitched musical instruments.
Altyn-Emel National Park covers about 5,200 square kilometres and includes deserts, mountains and river valleys. It is home to Przewalski’s horse, the only truly wild horse species in the world, successfully reintroduced here.
The tour combines the Singing Dunes with the colourful Katutau and Aktau mountains, ancient Saka burial mounds and views over the Ili River valley.
