Charyn Canyon is one of the most spectacular geological formations in Central Asia, often called the Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan. It stretches for about 80 kilometres along the Charyn River, with depths reaching up to 300 metres.
Formed over millions of years by erosion of red sandstone and clay, the canyon features towering rock formations that change colour throughout the day. The famous Valley of Castles resembles medieval fortresses and fantastical shapes.
Charyn also shelters a relict grove of Sogdian ash trees that survived the Ice Age in the canyon’s unique microclimate. The grove is protected as a natural monument.
The day trip includes walking routes suitable for different fitness levels. The main trail follows the river and offers close-up views of the rock formations, with opportunities to spot eagles and other wildlife.
